I, Tonya (3/3 Hats)

Kelvin Says Hats Off:

Just saw “I, Tonya: I Did Not Hit Her!” Conclusion: 8/10. Told in a fashion as irreverent as it’s subject, I, TONYA is a comical and bombastic look at Tonya Harding’s life leading up to the infamous incident. More than that, though, the movie examines family and class in America. Often times in America, people prefer to live under the assumption that skill and merit are the determinants of success. What the movie argues is that class and status are notable factors as well. Tonya Harding’s difficult relationship with her mother and underprivileged upbringing didn’t leave her when she stepped onto the ice. Margot Robbie gives a very fine performance as Tonya Harding and the ice skating scenes are shot beautifully. Allison Janney also is spectacular in playing Harding’s mother. While being careful not to venerate it’s subject, the movie paints a sympathetic view of Harding. It’s a much more nuanced view than the typical media depiction, at that. #HardingKnocks #OldLadyBird #IDontKerriganILoveIt #LaterSkater #IceIceSkating #OlymPic #IKneedIt #YouveGotHateMail

‘I, Tonya’: Blades of Gory (8/10)

It’s the story of Tonya Harding, my brother-in-law’s crazy aunt, but it’s probably a story that not many people really know the truth about. Overall, it’s very well acted (you can’t go wrong with Margot Robbie), and the storytelling is creative in a way that keeps your attention throughout. The story is a lot more violent and depressing than I thought it would be. As for complaints, I wish there had been a bigger emphasis on the skating and the competition, and some of the minor supporting characters were not given any character development. #skatecrime #takeaknee #thegilloolywedgame #stophittingonme #badmoms #hiddenfigureskating

So thankful that filmmakers decided to help me relive all the “Are you related to Tonya Harding?” jokes from my childhood! That aside, this movie displayed some absolutely ridiculous characters. Margot Robbie was great as Tonya, and Allison Janney was phenomenal as her mother. Janney is getting a lot of awards buzz and it’s certainly worth it. I really liked the way they told the story. It had a mockumentary feel to it and I think it really worked. By the end of the film I found myself saying “no wonder she was so messed up.” Overall, very entertaining, well-acted, and well made.
