Austinn Says Hats Off:

‘Hostiles’: Old-Timey Wind River (9/10)

Wow. I’ll start by saying that this movie is amazing. Christian Bale gives what’s probably his best performance ever. Rosamund Pike is also very good, as is the entire cast. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful, and the score by Max Richter, while somewhat minimal, is very powerful. This movie is extremely intense and very sad, but it is for good reason, driving home the hostility of the setting. The characters are hardened and brutal, but they are also very respectful. It also had a great ending, but if you’re like me, you’ll need some tissues along the way. #yellowhawkdown #hostileworkenvironment #caughtredhanded #alittlestandoffish #commanderandchief

Kelvin Says Hats Off:

Recently saw “Hostiles” – Talk the Talk and Walk the Hawk. Conclusion: 7/10. It’s a bit surprising to me how this movie just fell off the face of the earth in terms of advertisement. Nevertheless, it was a bit of an end-of-the-year surprise. Christian Bale brings a thorough and emotional performance that was one of the best of the year, for my money. He plays a jaded and rugged army captain, Joseph Blocker, who is assigned with taking an old Native American chief, Yellow Hawk, back to his tribal lands. Of course the conflict presents itself in Blocker’s antipathy towards the chief. While some of his dialogue can be clunky and traits generalized, the weariness he brings to the role accentuates his realizing of his own brokenness. Bale’s performance isn’t the only one of note. Rosamund Pike carries with her the usual notes of grief and strength that she demonstrates so well. I only wish that this depth of emotion would have been extended towards the native characters. That’s not to suggest they are totally ignored, there are some emotional stakes assigned to their lives, but the movie hinted at more than it actually gave. #BadThingsComeToThoseWhoQuaid #WalkBlocker #NoWestForTheWeary
