Kelvin Says Hats On:

Recently saw “Den of Thieves” – Fed Over Steals. Conclusion: 5/10. The movie is at its best when you don’t think about it too hard. The cops do whatever they want, there’s a lot of homophobic slurs and jokes, and it’s trashy in almost every way, but really, just don’t think about it. If you can get yourself to that point, the movie can actually be pretty fun. The movie’s use of Los Angeles is one I found interesting. It’s a much grittier portrait than is typically seen. This almost underworld of L.A. sets a captivating scene. In practice, it’s not really any different from any generic heist movie, but the film finds its own way through its setting. For how polished and glamorous a movie like “Ocean’s Eleven” is, that’s how raw this one aspires to be. On that level, the film works pretty well. The tone it pursues is the one it achieves. While what the movie is saying isn’t anything particularly fresh or even desirable, it’s at least competent in its telling. That counts for something anyway. #NickOfTime #RayDay #AnotherDayOfGuns #BankShots #BankMeLater

‘Den of Thieves’: The Passion of the Heist (7/10)

It’s a film that I enjoyed, but it’s far from perfect. It certainly did several things right. The score had some good moments, it was decently suspenseful, and the beginning sequences had me excited about the rest of the movie. But from there, the acting gets worse and worse and the story does not quite hold up. Even the action isn’t anything noteworthy. I did appreciate the ending, but it didn’t get the attention it deserved. #hoodcopbadcop #heresDonnie #TheBigNick #50shadesofRay #breakthebank
