The Death of Stalin (1/1 Hats)

Kelvin Says Hats Off:

Just saw “The Death of Stalin” – The Soviet Reunion. Conclusion: 7/10. Billed as a satire of the power struggle in the Soviet Union that resulted from, uh, the death of Stalin, the movie has a dark but humorous bent. Much of the humor is derived from the jockeying and backstabbing and positioning that is inherent in typical male power dynamics and infusing that into the setting. The movie is able to take that pretty far, though it feels like it is missing something – as if it’s a bit one-note. I think the movie works best when its political humor is a bit more cynical in tone. In these moments, it does draw some interesting and relevant parallels to our current time. I did like the stylistic choice of having all the actors speak in their native English or American accents. The acting is superb, and Steve Buscemi was certainly the highlight for me. At the very least, it’s refreshing to have a sharp and cultivated comedy in theaters. #StalinForTime #DontSvetIt #LoveItOrHitListIt #TheSocialismNetwork #TheyreRussianThings #BreakingComrad #LeninScented
