Book Club (0/1 Hats)

Kelvin Says Hats On:

Recently saw “Book Club” – Read, Grey, Love. Conclusion: 4/10. There’s nothing ostensibly terrible about “Book Club,” but it never turns into something worthwhile. It’s a shame because there is more than enough talent to go around. The four women who make up the book club, played by Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen, have loads of charisma but very little to put it towards. The hilarity of the premise of them picking “50 Shades of Grey” as their monthly book should have far more of a payoff than it receives. The emotional resonance of the movie, seeing how the book inspires change in their life, I think works pretty well. It is a little clichéd, but it doesn’t feel forced. Unfortunately, the comedic through lines are where the movie falls apart. There are some good comedic bits, but by and large, it comes up flat. For me, some of the funnier parts are between Diane Keaton’s character and Mitchell (Andy Garcia), who becomes her love interest. However, even in that relationship, the writing is too awkward to transform it into something more fun. As an aside, there are some parts of this movie that are allegedly set in Phoenix that were very clearly filmed in Los Angeles. It’s not like we’re halfway across the world, guys, c’mon. #SharonIsCarin #CarolOfTheBelles #LiveAndLetDiane #ARealAgeTurner #JudgeMoody
