‘Tag’: So Be It (5/10)

Very disappointing. The trailer made it look really fun and interesting, but it’s really just a bunch of grown men throwing tantrums and being inappropriate. The jokes only landed about half of the time for me, and some of the attempts at humor were very crass or even offensive. The story might be “based on a true story,” but that’s a bit of a stretch, as 95% of what goes on in the film is made up. Normally I wouldn’t care, but it was so over the top at times that it became somewhat annoying. The scenes where they are actually playing tag, however, were really fun to watch. #weddingdashers #afriendwithspeedisafriendindeed #whythelongchase #runamok #howtouching #tagteam

Kelvin Says Hats On:

Recently saw “Tag” – Too It to Quit. Conclusion: 5/10. Like game it’s named after, the movie sort of just keeps running around but with little actual purpose. It’s a male buddy comedy, and a pretty standard one at that. Jeremy Renner is probably the best part of the movie and Jon Hamm shows why he is a gifted comedic actor. Even with their dynamic performances, there’s a ceiling to how good they’re able to make what amount to replacement-level male comedy characters. What bogs them down a bit are some less impressive performances by Ed Helms and Hannibal Buress. They’re both a bit bland and some of their deliveries left me wanting. Some of the cruder jokes aside, it has some funny parts, especially during the tag sequences. There is something fun about watching grown men play a child’s game, but “Tag” doesn’t take much time to examine the importance of the game to its characters. It is hinted at, but mostly brushed around. It’s a theme though that I’d argue is a prevalent one in men. There is a yearning for and holding onto childlike fun. While the movie does a decent job in showing that fun, it doesn’t try to go much further than that. #HogansZeros #TagRace #TheWolfOfWallStreetJournal #HandUpGuy #TouchAdoAboutNothing #YouGotAFriendInSpeed

Did you see the trailer? Yes? Well, then you saw the movie. The real story itself is pretty funny. A group of men play a game of tag over the course of a few decades and it kept them close. How nice. The movie probably didn’t need to happen. There were some good laughs, but that’s about all it was. I managed to “personal fast forward,” a.k.a. sleep, during some of it and I felt like I didn’t miss anything. So, while the original story is cool, the movie is lacking. Good job, good effort, guys!
