Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (1/1 Hats)

Kelvin Says Hats Off:

Just saw “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” – Sophie’s Voice. Conclusion: 7/10. If you’re going to make a sequel, molding it in the form of the best one ever made – The Godfather Part 2 – seems like an odd choice for a musical. The kind-of-a-sequel-kind-of-a-prequel approach actually works pretty well narratively and emotionally. The two storylines in the movie revolve around a newly pregnant Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried, and the younger version of her mother, Donna, now played by Lily James. Much of the first half of the movie revolves around Donna and her past and the stories hinted at throughout the first movie. It takes its time to explore that Donna character and the movie isn’t seeking to fit in as many ABBA songs as it can. Interested in the story it’s telling, I thought it was successful in establishing that emotional through line. Of course, it is the music that we’re ultimately there for and the numbers are cracking. It doubles down on the kitsch from the first movie’s musical set pieces and it is a most welcomed choice – especially towards the end when the movie transitions back to Sophie and the current day characters. While it does slow itself down a bit and doesn’t have some of the better ABBA songs at its disposal, the movie still manages to be a more than worthy successor. #DonnaTheDead #CryTanya #Daughterloo #DramaMia #SuperTrouper2 #GreeceTheMusical
