BlacKkKlansman (2/2 Hats)

Kelvin Says Hats Off:

Just saw “BlacKkKlansman” – The Born Supremacy. Conclusion: 8/10. Spike Lee’s latest joint is as much a look back at a crazy story as it is an examination of the current times. That works for better and sometimes worse. The movie follows an African-American police officer (John David Washington) in Colorado Springs who, along with a white cop (Adam Driver), is able to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan chapter. Driver and Washington’s chemistry flows naturally and what follows is an almost twisted buddy-cop comedy. Sure, there are a few moments that are a bit too winking towards the audience, and as the movie ends, it ditches any pretenses of subtlety. But this is still a thoroughly fun watch. Underneath the humor, which it has in spades, there is a sense of anger, and I find that to be most intriguing. It’s clear that Lee is trying to draw some parallels. In those moments, the movie does battle itself in trying to tell its story without just turning to the camera and saying “you know, a lot of these problems haven’t gone anywhere.” While it pulls you in and out, it’s tough to not admire how impassioned it all is. Certainly, it is one of Spike Lee’s better films of late. It’s one that occupies two spaces: then and now. #KuLess #KluxBeALady #TheKlanBeforeCrime #HateSpringsEternal #SikeThatsTheRonNumber

Yes, Spike Lee went there. This movie is exactly what you’d expect it to be, if you’ve seen the trailer. This is social commentary of the past, but with major implications for the present. It was pretty well written and well acted. I love Adam Driver (sue me), he’s great. John David Washington did a great job as well and I look forward to seeing him in the future. My only major beef was the footage they used at the end (no spoilers). It felt a little on the nose, but the movie was headed in that direction anyways so it wasn’t surprising. If this movie makes you uncomfortable, good.
