A Simple Favor (1/3 Hats)

Just saw “A Simple Favor” – Sorry Not Sorry to Bother You. Conclusion: 6/10. I’m not quite sure what I just watched or if I even liked it, one thing is for sure, I was not bored. The first half of the movie plays like a typical mystery movie by establishing one character, the normal friend, and the other character, the soon-to-be-missing friend. In those roles respectively, I actually found Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively to be well suited. It is perhaps the most I have liked either of them in a movie. Their chemistry together as friends is believable and I was able to invest in the characters. The movie as a whole is rather pulpy and the humor can be equally smutty. Tonally, the two fit together. However, once the second-half hits, things get off-the-wall and erratic pretty quickly. Some of it is cringy, some of it is stupid, some of it works fine, and some things are a bit of all three. The difficulty is trying to unpack it all as it happens. I think that indulgence is the movie’s primary flaw, but it truly never leads to a dull moment. #BlakeDeadly #ThroughThickAndGin #BrotherlyLove #TwistedSisters #FavorOfTheMonth

‘A Simple Favor’: What Happened to Anything? (2/10)

It’s hard to make a movie likable when there are no likable characters, and the plot sucks. Let’s start with the positives. Anna Kendrick acted her part well … all right, on to the negatives. Blake Lively’s character is not what the trailers, or even the first few minutes of the film, make her out to be. Like I said, none of the characters were people that I cared about, and for good reason. The child actors were pretty bad as well. The plot is interesting until you actually think about it. It’s really all over the place, especially toward the end, and the motivations of the characters follow that same trend. There are also so many things that are brought up and then never addressed again. Also, the ending is just terrible. Just. Terrible. There were a couple great moments around the halfway mark where I thought things could start to get better, but it just made me more disappointed when they didn’t. Oh, also, it was too inappropriate. And it tried to be funny a few times and it was just an awkward failure. #RIP #badmomsreunion #eatavlog #MISSterious #Seanartist #ghostwiththemost #idkmybffEmily

I will start by saying that I haven’t been a huge Anna Kendrick fan up to this point, but she actually was pretty good in this film, and I think her performance was the best part. After that, this movie was all over the place. It would take a serious tone, then a comedic tone, and then a suspenseful tone, which can be good, but it was very jarring and awkward at times. There were some good laugh-out-loud moments, but those couldn’t save it for me. On top of that, there was a lot of cheesy writing and unnecessary moments. It just seemed like it didn’t know what kind of movie it wanted to be. Sorry, Anna, you couldn’t save this one!
