Just saw “Fahrenheit 11/9” – This Isn’t America. Conclusion: 6/10. The main thing that drives a Michael Moore movie is whether he can get out of the way long enough for his movie to breathe. Unfortunately for this one, he’s only able to half accomplish that. While I am certainly amenable to the political arguments made within the movie, and I share his urgency for the moment, there still has to be structure to the story he’s trying to tell. It plays more like a collection of shorts rather a full feature. That said, there are some highly compelling and well told segments and he has an undeniable ability to just sit and talk candidly with people. Most notable along these lines is his focus on the Flint water crisis in Michigan. It’s extremely well done, and it would be particularly difficult for someone regardless of their political bent to not feel enraged at the corruption that enabled it. His compelling storytelling is commendable, but Moore needs more structure and less of himself for his movies to really work. #MichaelMoops #MooreIsLess #InLikeFlint #OverTheHillary #DonaldDump

Saw, Fahrenheit 11/9: American Idiot

Rating as follows:
Total: 5.5/10

I am abandoning the traditional review structure for this one because it was a documentary and many of the categories don’t apply. This documentary was being promoted as less Trump-bashing, and more about what lead to the results of the 2016 election. While that was touched on mildly, it did not deliver on that promise. This film was fairly jumbled in many places. It jumped back and forth between different stories and it was pretty jarring. Michael Moore talked a lot about the Flint water crisis, which was pretty compelling, but didn’t have a big payoff for the overall theme of the movie. I found the Flint stories to be the most interesting parts of the entire movie. Beyond that, he hinted at things, but they never really added up to a lot of key takeaways. It’s important to say that while he did bash Trump, as you’d expect, he also criticized Obama, Hillary, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. He has clear objections to their policies and attitudes as well. So, it’s a toss-up for whether to recommend this to anyone. Enter at your own risk!
